EXCERPTS OF REVIEW OF SHOW WITH SALLY SPRING

NOVEMBER 17, 2012

'Backed by husband Ted Lyons – an at times spectacular acoustic guitarist with a unique light-but-sometimes-percussive style – and Middlesex-based bassist Larry Hutcherson – singer-songwriter and rhythm guitarist Spring dazzled the larger-than-average crowd with a deep, rich, emotive voice.'

-----

'From the first note of her first song to the last note of her encore Saturday night in the Swansboro Town Hall Annex, Sally Spring and her band showed why her latest album, “Made of Stars,” hit number one on the Americana music chart in Europe and number two worldwide.

 -----

'Another stellar performance was Gram Parson’s “Hickory Wind.” Again, Spring and company were faithful in spirit to the original, but made it uniquely theirs, changing the time signature. Gene Parsons, one of the founders of the Byrds, played pedal steel on Spring’s version on her “Mockingbird” album, a few years ago, and Hutcherson supplied tasteful lap steel Saturday

In fact, throughout the night, Hutcherson made a huge difference in the music, without overshadowing Spring or Lyon. His bass work consistently but unobtrusively anchored the dazzling flights of Lyon’s guitar, and he supplied fine harmonica on a couple of songs and provided accordion-like keyboards on “Blue Heaven “Lake Ponchertrain” and others.'

-----

'The final song before the encore was the real surprise of the night, a powerful rendition of late blues/jazz legend Willie Dixon’s “It Don’t Make Sense.” The song is a clarion call for peace

…and Spring sang it and Lyon and Hutcherson played it with the urgency and emotion called for right now in today’s troubled world.'

-----

The entire show was a “Beautiful Ride,” another gorgeous song Spring performed Saturday from “Made of Stars,”
