"I got my first guitar, a Stella from my Dad. It had been in someone's attic. When it was time for a new guitar at Christmas, we went to Louis Silvers' Pawn shop, the only place in my town to get guitars. There was a Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean, a Rolls-Royce, among the Fender Mustangs, Tiescos, and Kalamazoos. Probably the least suitable for a 13-year-old or an aspiring rocker, but a beauty! Dad went out on a financial limb for that one. When the clerk took it down to pack it up for us, he wiped it down solemnly and told us he had been planning to buy it when the price went down. Looked like he was going to cry. The guitar
went into our attic until Christmas. I snuck up there every time I was home alone. Crept into the living room to hold it after everyone had gone to bed on Christmas Eve."
Larry went from hometown bands to larger towns, then to traveling full time gigs across the NC, SC, Virginia, Tennessee. On to Canada, playing Country Rock and Rock and Roll. Along the way he has become proficient at electric and acoustic guitar, harmonica, keyboards, ukelele, slide and especially lap steel guitar.
After a house band gig in Westport, Connecticut, with Bill Lombardo (Guy's nephew!) (and a Portugese band in Bridgeport!)
Larry returned to North Carolina with a family, and spent a few years in a 'real' job, and returned to full-time music in the '90s, founding and hosting the legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue at the Berkeley Cafe, fronting bands of his own and releasing SOME GET LUCKY in 1995, to good reviews and regional sales.Larry has continued working as a sideman, studio player, solo artist, and music teacher.
This summer Larry releases his first official CD in years, I'M GOIN' BACK, with a guest list of drummers and a new batch of songs with an eclectic mix of Americana--Blues, Folk, Roots Rock, and more.
